What Happens if You Don’t Insure Your Car?

If you are a good driver, you may be tempted to drive without auto insurance. However, Michigan state law requires all drivers to be covered by auto insurance. According to Michigan Auto Law, if you are caught driving a car without auto insurance it will be counted as a misdemeanor. The same website reports that you could be fined up to $500, or go to jail for a year. 

In addition to a fine or jail time, if a driver without auto insurance is involved in an auto accident, you won’t be able to sue the other driver. Even if the other driver in your accident is at fault, and you are severely injured, you won’t be able to sue the other driver. According to the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services, a driver caught without auto insurance could also have their driver’s license suspended for 30 days. If you own a car, the state could decline to renew your car’s registration.
